2007 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A brand-new example of an old truck. introductionthink of the 2007 chevy silverado classic as a completely restored vintage truck. Or perhaps it's more like the discovery of a brand-new vehicle sitting in an old, abandoned warehouse. chevy truck introduced an all-new line of silverado pickups for 2007 and we love them. The 2007 silverado classic is exactly the same truck as the 2006 silverado, which was essentially the same as the 2005, 2004, and 2003 models. these previous-generation trucks are sold on the basis of price. The 2007 silverado classic models retail for about $2,000 less than the newer generation models. And that's not counting rebates and incentives. the newer generation silverado is vastly superior to the outgoing classic by every measure and it will almost certainly hold its value better. still, the silverado classic is a solid truck. It certainly beats a used truck. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give it a strong, rigid platform, like a rock, as its ads used to say. Heated leather seats, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado classic comfortable. Three trim levels are available: w/t, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,129 pounds with 2wd, 2,838 pounds with 4wd, and tows up to 10,300 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500. standard equipment on all silverado classics, even the most basic w/t (work truck, for $15,840), are am/fm stereo, tilt steering, driver information center, a chromed front bumper, painter rear step bumber, and 17-inch painted steel wheels. A passenger-s. walkaroundthe styling of the 2007 chevrolet silverado classic has an edgy angularity that the new silverado has abandoned in favor of a smoother, more aerodynamicaly integrated appearance. The mid-size colorado pickup still shares the classic's bold design cues; but otherwise chevy trucks (tahoe, suburban, avalanche, silverado) have all moved on to the new look. one of silverado classic's most distinctive features are the way its headlights angle down at the top, like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this seemed smoothly integrated into the front end, at least until we saw how much more smoothly the new silverado was put together. The classic's flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue its aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado classic. silverado classic's large door openings make getting in and out easier, and the door handles are big and easy to grab. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the city as much as in the woods. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Standard-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Both are 64. 8 inches wide at the floor. The crew cab's short box is 69. 2 inches long and 60. 2 inches wide at the floor. All three measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings. interiorinside, the silverado classic is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models a six-person capacity. It's split 40/20/40, available in cloth or vinyl, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. We wouldn't want to ride across the state back there, but three adults can fit and be reasonably comfortable for a short trip. The rear-seat bottom folds up to provide space for cargo, but it's still in the way when trying to carry a lot of stuff, and the floor is not flat. The entire rear seat assembly can be removed with a wrench and lifted out through the door when cargo capacity is more important than passenger space. crew cabs offer roomy rear seats and additional interior cargo space. The back seats in crew cab models are very comfortable, similar to the rear seats in a suburban or tahoe. The rear seats can be flipped down, like those in a suburban, to provide a big, secure cargo area. optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the optional leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. 2005 chevrolet equinox review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. introductionwith the 2005 chevrolet equinox, general motors finally has a compact suv to challenge the ford escape, honda cr-v and toyota rav4. It's bigger inside and out than most of the suvs in this class, and that's deliberate. Like the honda, toyota and ford products, the equinox is car-based, using the new gm theta front-wheel-drive architecture and adapting it for all-wheel-drive versions. This same architecture is under the saturn vue suv as well. the equinox's dimensions blur the line between compact and midsize suvs. It is 13. 9 inches longer than the arch-competitor and market leader ford escape, and only three inches shorter than a trailblazer, and that extra room will make all the difference on some families' buying decisions. It rides on a wheelbase that is 9. 4 inches longer than the escape's, yielding a generally smoother ride. When the rear bench and front passenger seat are folded flat, there's room inside this truck for eight-foot-long loads. The rear seatback is split 60/40 for added cargo/people hauling flexibility. lineuponly two equinox models are available, including the basic ls 20,995 fwd, $22,970 awd) and the more luxurious and better-appointed lt 22,710 fwd, $24,335 awd) versions. The 1se package 3475) for the lt adds to that onstar, leather seats, power sunroof, premium sound system with seven speakers, the six-cd changer, heated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, and redundant radio controls on the wheel. Aside from the packages, the equipment is offered as 18 different freestanding options including two colors of metallic paint, with most options available on either the ls or the lt. But its side-view shape is quite a bit different from the rest of the family, and for that, we like it. the pillars and the sheetmetal between the tops of the glass panels and the roof seem to us to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, perhaps important for a truck made on a car platform. The bigger size is evident everywhere. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the console. The center armrest has dual cupholders, a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Under the armrest is more storage, an open floor console with cupholder, cd holder and purse or briefcase storage. the rear seat sits on a track that allows it to slide back and forth by up to eight inches, to bring kids, brief cases, purses or cargoes closer or to provide extra room for tall passengers in the second seat. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat. There is a 12-volt power outlet and dual slide-out cupholders for rear passengers. gm's designers have used the space above the wheel wells to create a unique cargo storage system like the adjustable shelf in its larger suvs. A lightweight reversible panel slides into slots on the equinox's wheel wells at three different heights. Carpeted on one side and plastic on the other, the panel can serve as shelf, cargo cover or even a picnic or tailgating table. The tops of the wheel wells contain storage bins for small items. It starts, it runs, and it's relatively smooth. The new five-speed automatic transmission shifts up and down just fine. As we said, this is a 25-year-old engine design that is without benefit of balance shafts, variable-valve timing or variable intake, but it's perfectly adequate for family suv use. Chevrolet rates it to haul families plus trailer loads of up to 3500 pounds, and it has the guts to do it. we found the long-wheelbase chassis of this 3600-pound car/truck provided a plush ride, good cornering performance, relatively crisp handling, and long-trip comfort. The brakes are well matched to the size and weight of the equinox fwd that we tested, with good, progressive pedal travel and linear braking force application. equinox and the saturn vue have an electric power steering system. An electronic control unit programmed for a variety of performance characteristics controls an electric motor mounted adjacent to the steering column to provide the right amount of assist for a given driving situation. The steering ratio is variable, so the equinox has good, steady road feel in highway driving and low effort at low speeds for easier parking. We don't think the average american driver can tell it apart from hydraulic power steering, and that's a good thing, especially when combined with the fact that engine power isn't used to drive the system and can be used to move the vehicle, saving gasoline. summarywith its unique look and larger size than the american and asian competition, the equinox is in a position to please the more demanding customers looking for more power and more space than the norm in this segment. The equinox has a very flexible interior design with lots of space for family goods, and lots of space for american-sized people in both rows of seats. equinox is a chevrolet, with chevrolet-level quality and materials at a chevrolet price. It has a distinctly japanese feel to it, inside and out, but it's american, built in canada, and a heck of a deal for the money, we think. Since 2001, the chevy tahoe has been the best-selling vehicle in the category, accounting annually for more than 25 percent of all full-size suv registrations in the united states. for the 2007 model year, chevrolet rolls out its all-new and next-generation tahoe, a vehicle that promises to be updated and improved in seemingly every aspect, including fuel economy. All three rows offer spacious seating. Even adults can sit in the third row, but most we wouldn't want to spend a lot of time back there. out on the road, the new tahoe feels taut for a full-size suv, and the steering is precise and responsive. The brakes are responsive and smooth. At highway speeds the tahoe is quiet and comfortable. The new tahoe is built on a new and wider frame. As a result, the front track (the area spanned by the front wheels) has increased by more than three inches and the rear track has grown by an inch, resulting in a wider, stronger-looking stance. A pair of bulges in the hood enhances the vehicle's visual strength. further boosting the tahoe's stance are standard 17-inch wheels. The 2005 tahoe rode on 16-inch wheels. Even the optional, ceiling-mounted rear-seat dvd entertainment system has been redesigned to take up less space. The new dashboard and instrument panel have been lowered and moved forward under the base of the more steeply raked windshield. the result is a spaciousness that can be enjoyed from any of the three rows of seats. those seats have a more finished look with enclosed bases rather than exposed hardware. The tahoe we tested was equipped with the two-person third-row seat setup that comprises two separate seats, each with own cup holder and storage area. whether the third row seats two or three people, there are 16. 9 cubic feet of cargo space between the third-row seat back and the closed rear liftgate. even in its standard form, the tahoe's interior is comfortable and roomy, and that room can accommodate all sorts of optional equipment and accessories, from rear-seat dvd to bose audio to side curtain airbags, a navigation system and a sunroof. the 2007 chevy tahoe's more aerodynamic body not only cuts through the wind, but it reduces wind noise. With new acoustic dampening measures and better aerodynamics, the new tahoe is 20 percent quieter inside, according to chevrolet engineering tests. By that they mean that while the vehicle feels big inside, but has a taut feeling on the road so the driver doesn't necessarily feel like he or she is at the wheel of a full-size suv. that taut feeling starts with the new ladder-style frame that is nearly 50 percent stiffer overall and 90 percent stiffer in its forward section. As one gm engineer put it, although the new front end is only two inches longer, it provides the equivalent of 17 more inches of crush capacity in the event of a collision. While classified as a mid-size sedan, it's large for that class. Close in size to the toyota avalon, it competes with mid-size and full-size cars. Among them: the ford taurus, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima. we find the impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks contemporary, handsome, and clean. Inside, there's lots of room, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The impala has a big trunk with a big lid that simplifies loading cargo, and it has a generous capacity. Optional flip-and-fold-forward rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items. on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, a 3. 9-liter v6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the impala handles well, and surprisingly so. there are three trim levels, ranging from a sensible, reliable, and fuel-efficient family sedan to a more luxurious version with commendable performance and a good complement of features, and the two available v6 engines are dependable, responsive and efficient, while delivering ample performance. chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the impala. Two important standard features are stabilitrak, general motors' electronic stability control system that includes the function of traction control, and the latest generation of onstar, which will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the call center. changes for 2010 are few. Options include an engine block heater 75), 40/20/40 front bench seat 195), and a flip-and-fold-forward rear seat 295). the impala lt 25,055) upgrades to 16-inch aluminum wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls and more interior conveniences. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. aside from minor badging, the only exterior differentiations among the trim levels are the wheels and the standard rear spoiler on the ltz. interiorthe impala has a lot going for it inside as well. The standard seats have fairly firm cushions and decent lumbar support compared to previous models. A twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average. the dual-zone climate control system is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff. the base audio system comes with six speakers, am/fm/cd/mp3 capability, and xm satellite radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium audio system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) turn-by-turn is less expensive than a gps navigation system. the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub underneath that can contain spills or transport a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with cushions down, and exposes convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. They feature variable valve timing, which changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. the 3. 5-liter e85-compatible v6 that's standard on the ls and lt has variable valve timing and generates 207 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque. It gets an epa-rated 18/29 mpg city/highway on gasoline and 14/22 city/highway on e85 ethanol. the 3. 9-liter e85-compatible v6 has variable valve timing and produces 230 horsepower and 238 pound-feet of torque. The rear suspension uses a multi-link setup with gas-charged struts, coil springs, and a stabilizer bar. Ls and lt models come with the softer fe1 suspension, while the ltz has the performance-tuned fe3 setup and more responsive handling.

This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness. the front suspension comprises aluminum upper and lower control arms, with coil springs on two-wheel-drive 1500s. These feature a delayed-upshift mode for towing. They are excellent transmissions. interiorlike its exterior design, silverado's interior reflects traditional chevrolet thinking. The doors and door openings are the largest in the industry, and the cab is the roomiest. the instrument package looks like a cross between a corvette's and a traditional pickup's. All use pleasant, highly legible white-on-black graphics. the sound-system control panel is located above the climate controls. There are three 12-volt outlets at the bottom center of the dashboard for radar detectors, cellular telephones, laptop computers, and other accessories. an lt extended cab we drove awhile back came with six-way power front bucket seats with seat heaters and memory. Air conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders are built in for rear-seat passengers. A compass is incorporated into the lt's overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed with a wrench and lifted out through the door. a more recent drive in a 1500 hd crew cab revealed a really comfortable truck. The back seats are roomy and comfortable, very similar to those in an uplevel suburban. The seats were trimmed in handsome leather and they could be flipped down to provide a big, secure cargo area. This is a great truck for someone who wants a roomy rear seat with interior cargo space and big trailer-towing capability. about the only thing we don't like about the silverado interior is the design of the interior door handles, which swivel through an up-and-in arc, and felt loose whenever we used them. The system calls for assistance automatically if the truck's airbags have deployed. driving impressionsilverado lt drives like a luxury car and is supremely smooth and quiet. That smooth, quiet, unified feel is largely due to the stiff frame, which isolates the running gear for reduced noise and vibration. A cast magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right side of the dash further reinforce the stiff body. Squeaks and rattles simply don't happen. This is one strong truck, and its chassis rigidity allows the suspension to soak up and manage bumps and ruts and tar strips so well that its overall ride behavior is near the luxury class. A long, 143-inch wheelbase improves the ride further and enhances high-speed stability. the 1500hd crew cab model does not ride quite as smoothly. Even the rack-and-pinion system has a fairly wide dead spot in the center when cruising, which chevrolet says is designed to minimize steering corrections on the highway. That's enough grunt to smoke the rear tires at will. We recommend the 5. 3 over the smaller 4. 8. The big 6. 0-liter v8 that comes on the 1500hd delivers a ton of torque for pulling big, heavy trailers. braking hasn't been a traditional strong point for u. S.-built pickups, but here again the silverado breaks from tradition. Braking force begins only an inch into the pedal travel. A new feature called dynamic rear proportioning improves stability under heavy braking, whether the truck is loaded or empty. Improved interior, more safety features. introductiona solstice, not an equinox, is an event to celebrate. An equinox is by comparison a non-event, when light and dark are equal, when everything is just alright. the chevrolet equinox may not represent the return of the sun, either, but it should be considerably brighter for '07, thanks to a bounty of improvements that really are worth celebrating. Instruments and controls are largely new, and the chassis settings revised for better ride and handling. New options include upgraded audio systems, a remote starter, and at last a navigation system integrated into the stereo. these are welcome changes because we have not been enthralled with the equinox cabin. equinox is chevrolet's answer to the ford escape, honda cr-v and toyota rav4. But equinox is bigger and roomier than any of these competitors, and has features that enhance its versatility. The rear seatbacks also recline for additional comfort. It's nearly 14 inches longer than ford escape and just three inches shorter than a chevy trailblazer. Its long wheelbase gives the equinox good stability and ride quality. However, equinox seats only five, because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row, as does the toyota rav4. Like escape, cr-v and rav4, the equinox is based on a passenger-car design but has an interior like a traditional suv. Therefore, industry observers and other car crazies call the equinox a crossover utility because it crosses over the line from truck to car. lineupthe 2007 chevy equinox comes in two trim levels: the basic ls and the better-appointed lt. Both are available with front-wheel drive (fwd) or all-wheel drive (awd). All models come with a 3. 4-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission. equinox ls fwd 22,180) and awd 23,680) come with air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; cloth upholstery; a fold-flat front passenger seat; a multi-flex 60/40 split rear bench seat that folds, slides, and reclines; six-speaker am/fm/cd audio; and power windows, mirrors, and locks with remote keyless entry. Mirrors, door handles, and roof-rack side rails are body-color rather than charcoal or black. Optional side-impact and head-curtain airbags 395) come with a rollover sensor, so they can provide head and torso protection in a rollover as well as a side impact. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy equinox is aerodynamically smoother, thanks to a subtle re-shaping of front and rear fascias as well as the rear spoiler. From the front, equinox still looks the part of a chevy truck, with its requisite single-bar grille sporting a large gold chevrolet bow-tie emblem. But the black mask overlapping the front bumper has shrunken and retreated, which we find a subtle but worthwhile aesthetic improvement. it's harder to see the difference in the rear spoiler. And in side view, equinox looks pretty much the same as before. That's good, because we've liked equinox from that angle since it debuted for '05. in that broadside view, equinox looks quite a bit different from the rest of the chevy truck family. The roof pillars and the sheetmetal above the windows but below the roof seem to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, important for a truck made on a car platform. Equinox is based on a car-type platform, with unit-body construction rather than body on frame for better ride and handling. interiorinside, where the people live, work and ride, is where the chevy equinox shines when compared to some of its competitors. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the center tunnel. The center console/armrest has a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Dual cupholders pop out of the end of it, but they're flimsy and get in the way of the handbrake. The armrest flips up, providing better access to an open floor console that's a perfect place for a purse, briefcase or tote bag. The floor-mounted cupholder works well, while slots farther to the rear holds cds angled forward for easy selection. the equinox cabin is a clean and functional design. That said, some of the materials and control interfaces we found inside last year's equinox seemed to us less than bright. Window switches are now lighted. Also new for '07 is a standard driver information center that includes more than 20 personalization and vehicle information features, such as trip odometer, fuel range, outside temperature display and door locking programs. the rear seat rides on a track that allows it to slide back and forth up to eight inches, to bring kids or briefcases closer to the front, or to provide extra legroom for tall second-row passengers. With the rear seat full forward, there's 35. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind it. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat. because the rear seatback is split 60/40, equinox can transport two rear passengers along with long cargo items. The front passenger seat folds flat, further extending cargo room length. When folded, the hard front seatback can be used as a table or desktop. Rear passengers also enjoy a 12-volt power outlet and, new for '07, a fold-down center armrest with two additional cupholders. Rear head restraints were downscaled last year, improving rearward visibility for the driver. driving impressionchevrolet's 3. 4-liter unit is an old pushrod-overhead-valve design that lacks modern features such as variable valve timing and variable-length intake runners (although it does feature hydraulic roller lifters, just like a corvette). It feels strained when pushed at high rpm. Still, equinox delivers good acceleration under most circumstances, and it's smooth enough. Epa fuel economy estimates are improved somewhat for '07, at 19/26 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 18/25 for the awd version. the v6 engine is aided considerably by the five-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says the equinox can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8. 5 seconds, which should be adequate performance for most families. And while it may not excel at acceleration, equinox is rated to pull a 3500-pound trailer, the same as the more powerful escape and rav4 v6s. its long wheelbase and 3800-pound heft give the equinox a decent ride, making it a suitable companion for long trips. Its handling is responsive and it's easy to modulate the brakes for smooth stops. the equinox has good road feel in highway driving, yet steering effort is low at low speeds for easier maneuvering in tight parking lots. The steering ratio is variable, and the equinox uses electric, rather than hydraulic, power steering. We don't think the average driver will feel the difference between this system and more conventional hydraulics, and that's a good thing. But that doesn't make it the most ideal companion for the backwoods, or even the back streets. Chevrolet's tracker, on the other hand, is a fully trail worthy suv that's not much bigger than the car-based compact suvs. Yet it's not much more expensive than a well-equipped compact car. the current-generation tracker, which debuted in 1999, is far more refined than before. Now, the 2001 models offer attractive new trim options and an all-new v6. The tracker makes a lot of sense for a lot of people. lineuptracker prices begin at $15,235 for the two-wheel-drive, two-door convertible. That's about $1,300 more than last year, but it buys a significantly upgraded vehicle. Last year's standard 1. 6-liter inline-4 is now history; and the previously optional 2. 0-liter inline-4 is now included in the base price. Lt trackers trade the zr2's sporty fender flares for classy contrasting bodyside cladding and a chrome grille surround. Lt trim levels pack all the same functional features as the zr2 (including the v6 and automatic transmission) and add lower-profile tires, a luggage rack, cd player, color-keyed mirrors, and full-cloth upholstery. a flagship 4wd lt lists for $21,230. walkaroundlike previous-generation trackers, the current model shares its mechanical platform with a suzuki mini-utility. Earlier trackers were badged as geos. Tracker was promoted to full chevrolet status in 1998, but by then it was losing ground to newer, more car-like compact suv's like the toyota rav4 and honda cr-v. so one of the goals of the current design was to achieve more car-like refinement, without sacrificing tracker's off-road ruggedness. As if to reinforce its intent, tracker is distinguished with unique styling cues that give it a more rugged appearance than the other mini-utilities. And we think the chevy design looks a little cleaner than the suzuki vitara and grand vitara, which share the new platform. interiorat the same time, however, chevrolet and suzuki gave the tracker more competitive creature comforts. It may look like a truck from the outside, but the tracker feels like a car on the inside. front seats put driver and passenger high behind the wheel with plenty of headroom, although the seats are a bit narrow and spongy for truly good support. The tracker's nose slopes away for good road visibility, important when driving off road, while narrow roof pillars allow panoramic vision, important on busy streets. The spare tire is set low enough on the back door to see out the rear, though the rear head rests can block vision when they are in place. Instruments are highly legible and the switchgear operates with the finesse of a toyota or honda. If it weren't for the tiny little buttons on the radio, the tracker's dash would be an unqualified success. now standard, the air conditioning automatically activates whenever the windshield defroster is turned on, which provides dry air for quicker defogging action. Flipping the rear seats down provides a large cargo area capable of holding a big dog cage. Convertible models can be ordered with a lockable storage compartment. fabrics, plastics and materials are first-rate. They don't shout economy like the vinyl of past trackers, and the dark gray provides a lighter ambiance. The doors thunk firmly in place, and the seams inside are small and unnoticeable. Of all the changes chevy has made to the tracker, the upgraded fit and finish is the most convincing and thorough. the tracker automatically turns on the headlights and all exterior lights when it detects darkness. With its relatively broad power band, the tracker can pass with confidence on interstates, and there's no fear of getting run over when pulling away from busy intersections. The tracker's five-speed manual shifts smoothly, and combines with a light clutch for easy drivability. The tires squeal easily, even when making a low-speed u-turn. Like many small suvs, the tracker lacks grip on wet pavement; the rear tires tend to spin when turning and accelerating briskly away from a stop sign. We suspect the uniroyal tiger paws may be the culprits. The independent front suspension does a good job of damping out tar strips and other medium-sized bumps, and improves the trackers agility. The ride quality is not bad for a vehicle with a short wheelbase. The track, the distance between the left and right tires, is 2. 4 inches wider than in the old geo trackers, which improves stability. the latest tracker's rack-and-pinion steering does provide a more precise feel and better responsiveness than the recirculating-ball system used on the old geo models. Still, as with many suvs, the steering response is a little mushy on center. That's probably due to the wide p205/75r15 tires that come with the 4x4, but those tires offer a good compromise of off-road traction and on-road grip. braking is a pleasant surprise, with firm pedal feel. But with its tall roof and 4x4 capability, the tracker makes a strong case as an all-in-one vehicle that suits a wide range of needs. the tracker handles off-road duty, hauling small loads of furniture, and the daily commute.
