All-new sedan harkens to performance heritage. introductionthe dodge charger is dead, long live the dodge charger. The market will provide the answers, or for that matter, determine whether answers are needed. as for the car itself, no doubt it doesn't really care. It's a bold design statement, however it's viewed, a blend of throwback cues and modern form architecture. Whether it pleases matters less than whether it draws attention. The charger has all the pavement-ripping, gut-thumping power of the old muscle cars, but is packaged with modern creature comforts and tempered by startling levels of handling competency. Three engines are available, a 250-horsepower, 3. 5-liter v6; a 340-hp, 5. 7-liter v8; and a 350-hp, 5. 7-liter v8. All come with a five-speed, autostick automatic. the entry-level charger is the se, fitted with the v6 22,320). Cloth upholstery is standard, but the se isn't lacking in creature and driver comforts. Among them: air conditioning; cruise control; tilt-and-telescope steering wheel; soft-finish urethane-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; floor mats; power door locks, outside mirrors, windows and remote trunk release; two power points; driver and passenger lumbar adjustment; and am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary input jack. Steel wheels with bolt on covers wear black sidewall, all-season, p215/65r17 tires. The protection group 590) adds front and rear side-curtain airbags, cabin air filtration and self-sealing tires. Convenience group ii includes dual-zone, automatic climate control; heated front seats; power adjustable pedals; 8-way power front passenger seat; and one-touch, automatic up and down power windows with anti-pinch auto-reverse 955). The electronics convenience group adds a security alarm, programmable universal garage door opener, trip computer, selectable vehicle information display, compass and a set of steering wheel-mounted, redundant audio controls 630). Behind the fun tab of the option book is the road/track performance group, what some who remember the ultimate stealth muscle car of the 1960s might call the road runner edition, as in, more go, less show: unique aluminum wheels with black accents, sportier steering, self-leveling shocks, sport seats, performance suspension and, the kicker piece, a tweaked v8 making 350 horsepower 1600). safety features that come standard on all charger models include antilock brakes, all-speed. walkaroundin many ways, the newest charger isn't much sleeker, or more aerodynamic than the original. Knocked off from the 1966 dodge coronet, and despite its fastback, two-door hardtop styling, that charger was somewhat blocky, with squared-off front end, superficially sculpted slab sides and equally vertical backside. There was the barest hint of a so-called coke bottle look, with the body sides slightly pinched in about where there would have been a b-pillar. Not until the 1968 model year was any attention paid to moving the car rapidly through the air with minimal disturbance. The 2006 charger starts at much the same place on the automotive styling evolutionary curve. and for good reason. The same design team that parented the chrysler 300 and dodge magnum birthed this new charger. The charger is built on the same platform as those two, but is three inches longer overall. The charger reportedly was planned all along to be a sedan version of the magnum. with this legacy, it's no surprise that there's an uprightness to the charger's silhouette, regardless of viewing angle. The front end, in fact, tilts forward, as if it's leaning into the wind, specifically to recall the brutish, pre-aero-age styling of its muscle car era namesake. The trademark dodge crosshairs, chromed on the sxt and r/t, body-color in the se and srt8 and flat black on the daytona, dominate the front end. Compound halogen headlights peer out under hooded, almost scowling brows. A thin, trifurcated air intake slices across the lower portion of the front bumper, beneath which the daytona and srt8 wear a trim, flat-black chip spoiler. Fog lamps on the sxt and higher models fill small, sculpted insets at the lower corners. from the side, the demi-fastback roofline and glasshouse look more grafted onto the somewhat fulsome body than a natural extension of the overall styling theme, very much as if the designer were trying to make a sedan look like a coupe. The beltline arcs softly back from a slight droop over the headlights to about midway in the rear side window, then kicks up over the rear quarter panel, visually bulking up the car's already hefty haunches. Flip-up, top-hinged door handles are flush mounted but operate sufficiently friendly to pose no major threats to fingernails. the rear perspective shows a tall, almost vertical backside, with large taillights draped over the upper corners. A modest, kamm-like lip stretches across the trailing edge of an expansive trunk lid, atop which sits a lift-suppressing spoiler on the daytona and srt8. A recess in the bumper holds the license plate. On the se and sxt a single exhaust tip exits beneath the right-hand side, while the v8-powered models sport chrome-tipped, muscle car-idiom, dual exhausts. the charger's styling is loosely reflected on nascar's nextel cup cars, primarily seen in the crosshair grille and the painted-on taillights. interiormuch of what holds about the charger's exterior carries over to its interior, only more so. Where the outside only suggests other chrysler and dodge cars, the inside looks as if it's been lifted, locks, steering column and bucket seats from the magnum, with a fixture and feature here and there brought over from a dakota or a durango. the dash and instrument cluster is identical to the magnum's, with the minor exception of surface trims on the center stack and center console, and when ordered on the r/t, the navigation display. This isn't to complain, but to compliment, as the arrangement is pleasantly informative. From the driver's seat, easily scanned, large, round speedometer and tachometer share the top half of the steering wheel opening, with fuel and coolant temperature gauges down in the left and right corners, respectively. The steering wheel, too, comes directly from the magnum. Air conditioning registers fill the top of the center stack, above the stereo/navigation display, with the climat.

Big, bold and just right. introductionwe could not have attracted more attention if we'd been in a $100,000 mercedes-benz. The well-dressed group was shivering in the damp washington weather, waiting at the valet booth after seeing a musical at the kennedy center. Its big ram grille and broad freightliner fenders loomed out of the darkness and into the flood lights accompanied by the burbling v8. We had to smile at the soft 'wows' and 'ohs' from the upscale crowd as we tipped the attendant, climbed in and drove away. with its big-rig look, the durango always looks ready, whether it's heading down a primitive road or parked at the shopping center. Based on the dodge dakota pickup, the durango is bigger than the ford explorer, but not as big as the ford expedition or chevy tahoe. That's a bit more robust than the expedition's optional 5. 4-liter v8 (230 horsepower, 325 pound-feet of torque) and compares favorably to the tahoe's 5. 7-liter v8 (255 horsepower, and 330 pound-feet of torque). Fuel economy for the 5. 9-liter dodge v8 is rated at 12/16 mpg city/highway verses 13/17 for the 5. 2-liter dodge v8, and adds $595 to the price. The 3. 9-liter v6 is rated at 175 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. the durango should make a better tow vehicle than an explorer. With the 5. 9-liter engine and 3. 92 differential, it's capable of pulling a trailer of up to 7,200 pounds. Chevy's tahoe is rated to pull 7,000 pounds and ford's expedition is rated for 8,000 pounds. two-wheel-drive versions have been added for 1999. It's a good setup for people who live in a dry climate, but want to be able to shift into ultimate off-road mode. It comes with everything above plus a planetary center differential. Shifting to full-time mode allows the front and rear axles to turn at different speeds, so the wheels don't fight each other in tight quarters yet traction is assured under all but the worst conditions. The back half of the roof is raised nearly 2 inches to increase rear-seat headroom and visibility. Viewed from outside the vehicle, the raised portion is cleverly disguised with a roof rack. second-row seats are quite comfortable, offering plenty of headroom and adequate legroom. Stable cupholders and rear heating/air conditioning controls add to comfort. third-row seats are surprisingly comfortable for two people, who achieve adequate legroom by tucking their feet under the second row of seats. Getting in and out of that third row is easy: flip a lever and the second-row seatback folds forward, then tumbles out of the way allowing a quick entry or exit. It's one of the best third-row seating designs on the market. when it's time to haul cargo, the tailgate lifts up and out of the way and the two rows of seats are easily folded down to provide a large, relatively flat floor. A trout bum could sleep back there. All durangos have a long, narrow storage compartment under the floor just inside the rear lift gate. With enough space for the jack, flares and other roadside equipment. An additional storage compartment replaces the footwell when the optional third row is not ordered. slt trim is currently discounted at $2,730 and includes a long list of luxury amenities, starting with leather upholstery. overall, the interior design is executed well. Matching plastic trim provides an organic appearance. The seats appear rather plain, but they are comfortable. Carpeting is carried through to the backs of the rear headrests, which do not have to be removed when the seats are folded down. the driving position is comfortable with good visibility over an attractive rounded hoodline. Instruments are big and easy to read, though the speedometer appears busy with 2 1/2-mph hash marks. Power outside mirrors are easy to adjust with a big knob on the driver's door. Cupholders and storage trays are nicely designed, while a digital compass and other useful readouts is overhead. Large buttons on the leather wrapped steering wheel operate one of the most well-designed cruise control systems we've seen. driving impressionas sport-utilities go, the durango is fun to drive. We spent a week with the big 5. 9-liter magnum v8 in the washington area. It always feels willing to get down the road quickly with excellent throttle response and quick acceleration. a daylong drive though the texas hill country west of san antonio showed us dodge's 5. 2-liter v8 also has lots of power for undulating highways and steep, rocky trails. The durango handled well when driven briskly down narrow roads with tight corners and sweeping turns. Compared to other sport-utilities, the durango feels sporty. Steering is precise and the suspension provides excellent transient response, crisply turning from left to right and back again. Shifting is smooth and responsive and transmission ratios are matched well to the healthy torque of the two v8s. peeling off the pavement, we bounced down rocky, unpaved roads through the hills. We'd drive a durango anywhere. durango's competent off-road capability and on-road handling response don't come as a free lunch, however. We found ride quality on downtown washington's crumbling infrastructure a bit on the harsh side. It also compares favorably to the full-size ford expedition, chevrolet tahoe and gmc yukon. while it may compare with other suvs, it certainly doesn't look like them. Dodge durango makes a statement. We think it's a bold, attractive statement. We think dodge succeeded at its goal of producing a smarter suv. The durango is intelligently designed and easy to operate. 2006 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Dakota is the largest pickup in its class and the only mid-size truck available with a v8. Dodge claims its 7150-pound maximum towing capacity is by far the best in class. the dakota looks big. Completely redesigned for 2005, it's larger than before and looks almost as big and tough as the full-size dodge ram. Getting in is easy, and the redesigned interior is comfortable and convenient with controls that are easy to reach and operate. The club cab version of the dakota achieved a five-star safety rating in frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the federal government. for 2006, the rear doors on club cabs have been redesigned to open wider. Otherwise, changes between 2005 and 2006 are limited to packaging: a new sunroof and new sound systems are options for 2006 club cab models. An auxiliary audio jack has been added to allow playback from personal audio devices, such as an ipod. Sirius satellite radio now comes standard on 2006 laramie models. Dakota is available with a choice of v6 and v8 engines. Underway, the dakota is smooth and quiet. The optional 4. 7-liter v8 burbles subtly in the background when cruising, but really scoots when the throttle is mashed. Yet its fuel economy is rated within 1 mpg of the standard v6's. The steering is light for easy maneuverability in crowded parking lots and the dakota responds quickly on mountain roads and tracks nice and straight on the highway. lineupdodge dakota comes in two body styles: the club cab is an extended-cab version with small, reverse-opening rear doors to access the rear compartment and a 6 1/2-foot bed. Each can seat five to six passengers, but back-seat riders will be much more comfortable in the quad cab. Both bodies are built on the same 131. 1-inch wheelbase. three trim levels are available, st, slt, and laramie. the standard engine is a 3. 7-liter v6. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission. A 4. 7-liter v8 engine is available for all models 785-$860). A high-output version of the 4. 7-liter v8 is available for the slt and laramie. Side-curtain airbags for the front and rear seats are optional 495); we recommend them because they are designed provide head protection. Head restraints and shoulder belts are provided for all seat positions. A sunroof is available for the quad cab. An optional hands-free communications system that uses bluetooth technology integrates a compatible cellphone with the truck's audio system. option packages for 2006 include trx, trx4 off-road, r/t, and night runner. Each is available in the club cab or quad cab configuration. trx includes unique five-spoke/five-lug 16-inch aluminum wheels and goodyear wrangler off-road tires; tow hooks; a limited-slip differential; and trx decal on the cargo box. The trx package is available on 2wd st, slt and laramie. Trx4 off-road includes everything in the trx package plus painted shocks; an increased ride height of one inch; heavy-duty service package; skid plates; trx4 off-road cargo box decal; and slush mats. r/t is an slt with the high-output 4. 7-liter engine and: 17-inch five-spoke/five-lug chrome-clad aluminum wheels; hood scoop; sport appearance package (in red flame or black only); body color grille surround; chrome exhaust tip; cargo box decals; r/t identification on headrests and instrument cluster; and satin silver accents for the center stack and door remotes. night runner. walkaroundthe dodge dakota looks massive and menacing. The dakota retains its family resemblance to the dodge ram and durango, though it looks crisper and the grille is laid back, not vertical. Dakota's frame is shared in part with the durango suv. a coil-over-shock independent front suspension is used on both 2wd and 4wd models, with conventional leaf springs at the rear. All models come with front and rear tow hooks and tie-downs in the bed. interiorthe interior was redesigned for 2005 and continues with little change for 2006. Black-on-white gauges are outlined with chrome rings, and the central speedometer is about twice as large as the other two gauges. The angular center stack houses the sound system, climate controls and vents. The designers added in more brushed sheet metal accents around the cockpit, and the whole design works very well in terms of usability, convenience, and reach. The plastic materials look good but not great, and interior fits and finishes were good. the driver's seat looked good and felt good with its upper and lower support wings and good padding where it counts. Quad cab interiors are roomy. By making the dakota larger, dodge expanded the quad cab interior to nearly 56 cubic feet. The rear seats are deliberately stepped up on their bases so that rear-seat occupants can see out more easily, and they are split into 40/20/40 folding sections with two rear cupholders. Rear-seat room is generous for family use, with 33 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat. A center console and lots of cubbyholes provide space to stash stuff. driving impressionwe found the dodge dakota surprisingly quiet, smooth and civil in its behavior, more like a car than a truck inside. Thick glass, big mufflers, and generous sound insulation throughout the body and firewall help reduce noise. the dakota drives bigger than it looks, with a hefty, ram-like way about it, a nicely muscular street swagger. the v8 is worth every penny. The v6 feels a bit light on power for this big, heavy pickup and it doesn't offer a big fuel economy advantage. the 3. 7-liter v6 is rated 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. The 4. 7-liter v8 generates 230 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. The 4. 7-liter high output v8 is rated 260 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, thanks to higher compression and more aggressive valve timing. A v6 4wd automatic is rated 15/19 mpg city/highway by the epa; a v8 4wd automatic rates 14/19. At highway speeds it settled down to a nice background burble in overdrive fifth gea. It's considered a crossover vehicle because it straddles the line between car and suv. The new interior design and materials give it one of the nicest cockpits in the class. It comes standard with seating for five, with a two-passenger third row optional. Either way it has useful, though not class leading, cargo space. Seats flip and fold to provide a wide range of versatility in hauling people, cargo, or both. It features some unique storage solutions owners will find useful. Among them: a bin under the front passenger seat, storage under the floor in the second row and behind the last row of seats, a dual glove box with dodge's chill zone that cools soda cans, and all the usual cubbies up front, including a fairly deep center console. A navigation and sound group 1,695) includes six premium infinity speakers with subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier, garmin navigation, 30-gigabyte hard-drive, rear park assist, rearview camera, uconnect phone, six premium infinity speakers with subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier, and voice command. Rear dvd entertainment comes with the infinity sound system 845) and sirius backseat tv can be added 525). The look might be described as bold. Actually, it runs the full width of the vehicle and is flanked on either side by integrated fog lights on crew, r/t and lux models. The roofline flows nicely from the windshield, curving down slightly front to rear. The taillights themselves are now ringed by leds. The rear bumper has an integrated step pad that matches the height of the load floor. In overall dimension, it is actually longer than such seven-passenger crossover competitors as the toyota highlander, subaru tribeca and hyundai veracruz. The dashtop, door panels, armrests and center console are all soft to the touch. Added sound-deadening material makes it quieter underway. The same couldn't be said last year. the center stack is completely redesigned for 2011 with three low-set knobs surrounded by several buttons. The climate controls are arrayed around the center knob, and they're easy enough to use. the infotainment system choices are all new for 2011. The base version has a 4. 3-inch touchscreen and a standard audio input jack and usb port; it's offered with or without sirius satellite radio. The next step up comes with an 8. 4-inch touchscreen and a 30-gigabyte hard drive that can hold up to 6700 song files. There is also a premium version of this unit that adds bluetooth streaming audio, voice command, a garmin navigation system with sirius travel link, and pre-programmed hands-free texting responses. We've had limited exposure to the new system but it works fairly well. Given garmin's reach, more people should be familiar with the navigation system, but we think it looks cartoonish. An am/fm radio with in-dash six-disc cd changer and six speakers is standard. An available rear dvd entertainment system has a nine-inch screen.

A fixture at the entry end of the dodge lineup from 1960 through 1976, the dart was discontinued in 1977 and its badge went into mothballs, forgotten, but obviously not gone. Now it's been resuscitated, and affixed to this all-new line of compact sedans. so the name is the same, and the new 2013 dodge dart occupies the same position in the dodge passenger car hierarchy as the original. But the similarities end right there. The first car to incorporate engineering elements from corporate parent fiat, the revival dart is a contemporary front-drive compact facing a considerably stronger competitive environment than its 20th century namesake. Does it have the chops to be a compelling alternative to the chevy cruze, ford focus, honda civic, hyundai elantra, kia forte, nissan sentra, mazda 3, subaru impreza, toyota corolla, and vw jetta? the answer is a definite maybe. Although fundamental elements of its unitbody foundations were adapted from the alfa romeo giulietta, the snappy italian hatchback, they've been stretched to accommodate the sedan body style: longer wheelbase, longer overall, wider track, wider body. Epa fuel economy estimates range up to 41 mpg on the highway (for the yet-to-be-seen aero model). Suggested retail pricing for the five trim levels opens at $15,995 and climbs to $19,995 for the limited model. The sporty r/t version carries a $22,495 base price. demerits: just one. For all the emphasis on the weight-saving benefits of high-strength steel, the darts are a little pudgy by compact standards. Listed curb weights start at 3186 pounds for a dart 2. 0-liter with manual gearbox and go as high as 3348 pounds for a model equipped with the 2. 4-liter engine and automatic transmission. it might also be noted that the wide array of models and trim packages could pose an assembly quality challenge for the belvidere factory. A hint of forward-leaning rake, plus modest front and rear overhangs, suggests sportiness. The styling doesn't provoke many double-takes, however. the design team took great pains with aerodynamics. The shape evolved through extensive wind tunnel time, and thoughtful details include active grille shutters that close to restrict radiator airflow when cooling air isn't needed, to reduce aerodynamic drag. The underbody is fully enclosed, and a rear diffuser manages underbody airflow to enhance stability. the net of all the aero attention is a praiseworthy drag coefficient of 0. 285, enhancing fuel economy and also helping to minimize wind noise. dodge signature elements for its latest offering are a new interpretation of the division's crosshair grille, and a taillamp treatment, adapted from the dodge challenger, that spreads across the entire rear end, incorporating 152 leds. one other exterior note, that relates to the interior.
